What is an Undercut?

An undercut is a recessed feature in a man’s hairstyle. The perfect match for men with square or diamond faces, an undercut creates a sleek silhouette and balances angular facial features. This type of hairstyle can be subtle or dramatic, depending on the cut you choose. Undercuts can also be blended to create a seamless effect.
Undercuts are recessed features
Undercuts are recessed features that are formed in an angled surface. Recessed features are often symmetrical in shape, but can also be bi-directional. The recessed feature on one side of a lateral opening is wider than that on the other side. A mirror image recessed feature can also be formed.
Undercuts can be used to add assembly features to injection-molded parts, eliminating the need for secondary assembly. However, they require a more complex mold design than a regular cavity. In addition, some undercut surfaces cannot be accessed by the overhead tool. Therefore, these parts tend to be more difficult to manufacture and, in general, incur higher costs. Furthermore, they often require special tools and specifications that can be difficult to meet.
Undercuts are not simple to form, but an experienced thermoformer can produce a detailed and consistent undercut. Pressure forming is another option to create recessed features. This method is similar to vacuum forming, but the process applies significant positive air pressure to the back side of a part.
They require specialized tools
Undercuts are a special kind of shaping that requires specialized tools. The process of creating an undercut can be tricky and time-consuming. Undercutting end mills are designed for this purpose, and can make the process easier and faster. Several types are available, with different wrap angles and neck lengths. A higher wrap angle creates a more spherical cutting end, while a lower wrap angle sacrifices clearance for rigidity.
Creating custom tools is expensive and time-consuming. Ideally, you should use standard-diameter undercut features to simplify the machining process. Undercut features with non-standard dimensions, such as a 0.053-inch radius in a slot, require a specialized tool.
Besides milling tools, undercuts can also be edge-broken using special tools. Some manufacturers offer specialized deburring tools with right and left-hand flute orientation, which are especially useful in complex shapes. You can also use specialized 5-axis machines to deburr the entire workpiece in one shot.
They aren’t recommended for diamond-shaped faces
Undercuts aren’t a good choice for diamond-shaped faces, because they oversharpen the face’s features, especially the cheekbones. However, they can be worn by men with other face shapes. For instance, Cillian Murphy, the star of Peaky Blinders, wore an undercut in the film.
Diamond-shaped faces tend to have the largest cheekbones. For this reason, heavy rounded bangs can make the face look shorter, and straight across bangs can make the chin look narrower. Fauxhawk bangs are a great choice for diamond-shaped faces.
To add height to the hair on a diamond-shaped face, try a high-volume hairstyle. Make sure that the sides aren’t too short, as this will make the ears look bigger. Instead, a chin-length bob will add width to the face.
They can be fixed with stringer bead or weaving
An undercut is a problem with the weld and can reduce the strength of the overall structure. It typically runs a small distance but can still cause stress when the weld is subjected to fatigue loading. Undercuts can be fixed by weaving or stringer beads. It is important to pay attention to detail when repairing an undercut to avoid overfilling the weld.
Using a flux-cored bead can be very effective in preventing a “drip” halfway through the weld. This happens when molten metal drips from the weld onto the floor. Using stringer beads is also recommended for forwarding carbon and low-alloy pipe, which are often used in a vertical fixed position. Using a stringer bead requires no motion on the part of the welder and is a more efficient way to repair an undercut than weaving.
Undercuts are most commonly fixed using the stringer bead or weaving method. These techniques are more intricate and time-consuming, but they can be effective in fixing an undercut. Stringer bead and weaving are best used on thicker materials and on pieces that have several layers.
